Nkosinothando Mhlanga

Nkosinothando “Nkosi” (she/her) recently graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies and Climate Humanities. Born in Zimbabwe, raised in Eswatini, and with strong family ties in South Africa, she embraces her identity as an African immigrant in Canada. Her commitment to advancing climate justice is deeply rooted in her lived experiences: navigating the legacies of colonialism, witnessing how a changing climate threatens agricultural practices across the Global South, and drawing inspiration from the resilience of communities who continue to adapt and resist in the face of these challenges. At Carleton, Nkosi contributed to the Frank St. Bee and Butterfly Garden, where she mapped land-use jurisdictions in Ottawa and connected community gardens to urban green space initiatives aimed at tackling food deserts and fostering resilient, nature-connected communities. Beyond the classroom, she served on youth councils, led her program’s student association as president, and supported REUSE Ottawa’s public messaging campaign, promoting innovative solutions to reduce single-use plastics by circulating reusable containers at restaurants, festivals, and grocery stores. Guided by radical hope and collaboration, Nkosi is eager to continue exploring how federal policies can protect ecosystems, foster socially and economically sustainable communities, and advance reconciliation with First Nations. She is placed with MP Yasir Naqvi (Ottawa Centre, Standing Committee on International Trade and Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association).
