Luca Rampersad
Hailing from Markham, Ontario, Luca is currently pursuing a degree in International Relations and Political Science at the University of Toronto. His passion for environmental justice developed out of his deep-seated belief in the inherent respect owed to all living things—an ethic that he inherited from his parents, and that he internalized on many a nature walk growing up. He learned more about the climate crisis and the need for immediate climate action while doing Model UN throughout high school, and brought his skills to the climate advocacy space as the Policy Lead and Political, Governmental and Societal Practices Lead at Canada’s 2023 Local Conference of Youth.
Luca’s entry points into environmental policy are international climate politics and the intersection between climate and economic justice. As an analyst at U of T’s G7 Research Group, Luca monitored how well countries integrated sustainable development principles into their overseas development assistance frameworks, and remains hopeful for an international community committed to taking bold climate action. Having both seen and experienced financial precarity, Luca also believes that climate justice is incomplete without economic justice, and dreams of a world where people live fulfilling, dignified lives on a healthy planet.
When he’s not reading the news or running around Parliament Hill, you can find Luca practicing his pitching mechanics (he hasn’t internalized that he probably won’t be making the MLB), playing any number of video games that are essentially dressed-up spreadsheet simulators, or taking long, meandering walks to nowhere in particular.
