Mohammad Akib Hossain

Mohammad Akib Hossain (he/him), who goes by Akib, is a South Asian Muslim Bangladeshi newcomer to Canada living in Treaty 4 Territory. He recently graduated with Great Distinction from the University of Regina, earning a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a Minor in Creative Technologies. While his academic background is rooted in technology, Akib is deeply passionate about intersectional environmentalism, community engagement, and youth climate advocacy.
His interest in sustainability and governance deepened through his work with the United Nations Association in Canada, where he co-founded a Regina branch and launched “17 SDGs in 12 Months”—an initiative mobilizing local engagement with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. A dedicated climate advocate, he represented Saskatchewan at the inaugural Canadian Youth Climate Assembly, where he spoke at the Senate of Canada on the critical importance of youth engagement in climate policy.
His leadership spans extensive community-building and advocacy spaces. Akib served as a University of Regina Ambassador Leader for 32 months and has sat on several nonprofit boards, including the Regina Public Interest Research Group and The Social Initiative, refining his skills in consensus-building, community advocacy, and institutional governance. As a Youth Advocate with UNICEF Canada, Movember, Students Commission of Canada, Jack.org, and through collaborations with organizations such as the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation and Multicultural Council for Saskatchewan, he has consistently championed meaningful youth participation and inclusive civic spaces.
As a newcomer to Canada, Akib is committed to bringing diverse community voices and lived experiences into environmental policy conversations. His primary goal throughout the internship will be to better understand federal decision-making while bridging the gap between Parliament and the public. His ultimate goal is to make complex government and environmental information accessible, transparent, and relevant to everyday Canadians.
Akib’s leadership and community contributions have been recognized through prestigious honors, including the 3M National Student Fellowship, the Saskatchewan Multicultural Youth Leadership Award, Regina 25, and the University of Regina Student of the Year Award. When not working, you can find him taking photos, building community through social media, or having a great conversation.
